GEX Open Interest chart

The GEX Open Interest chart shows gamma exposure strike by strike, computed on the open contracts of the active symbol. It is the Open-Interest-based view of GEX: where gamma sits along the strike ladder, and where it changes sign.

The intraday GEX Open Interest chart on SPX, gamma per strike with the market maker levels

GEX per strike computed on open contracts, with the SPOT, OPEN, RES MM and SUP MM levels and the Put/Call ratio in the legend.

Side menu, Symbol → Intraday Analysis → GEX Open Interest. It refers to the active symbol. Available on the Premium and Ultra plans; it does not support futures contracts.

  • Bars per strike — the gamma exposure attributable to that strike, with the call component and the put component in different colours.
  • Gamma Flip — the level where aggregate gamma exposure changes sign. Enabling it shades the chart background either side of the level; unlike GEX Gaudio, this chart does not draw a labelled GAMMA 0 line. Same concept, described on Gamma Flip (Gamma 0).
  • Summary cards below the chart:
Card What it tells you
Spot Price Current price of the underlying
Last Update Time of the last data refresh
Expiration The expiration the chart refers to
Total Call GEX OI Aggregate call-side gamma exposure
Total Put GEX OI Aggregate put-side gamma exposure
GEX Difference Net difference between the two sides

The Chart Settings popover holds the display switches:

  • Show Levels — overlay the reference levels.
  • Gamma Flip — highlight the sign-change level.
  • Price Trend — overlay the price line on the gamma profile.
  • Net Positions — show the net balance instead of the two separate sides.

Outside the popover: Rotate chart, Reset Zoom, Screenshot and Fullscreen. Settings are stored as the page layout for that symbol.

Open-Interest GEX describes the accumulated hedging burden: the gamma that is already on dealers’ books, independent of what trades today. It is the slower, more structural of the two GEX views, which makes it the right one for framing the session — where the flip level sits, and which strike clusters will matter if price gets there.

  • GEX Open Interest is built on open contracts: it changes slowly and describes the standing state.
  • GEX Volumes is built on the volume traded today: it reacts within the session and shows the gamma being created right now.

Reading them together separates “where the market already is” from “where it is going”.

  • Treating the Gamma Flip as a static level. It moves as positioning changes; re-read it during the session.
  • Reading GEX as a directional signal. It describes a mechanical hedging regime, not a forecast.
  • Using it on an illiquid chain. GEX profiles are only meaningful where option volume and Open Interest are real.
  • Trying it on a futures contract. The intraday GEX charts do not support futures.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GEX Open Interest chart show?

Gamma exposure per strike computed on the open contracts of the active symbol, with the call and put components in different colours, the Gamma Flip level where aggregate gamma changes sign, and summary cards giving spot price, expiration, total call and put GEX and the net difference.

What is the difference between GEX Open Interest and GEX Volumes?

GEX Open Interest is computed on contracts already open, so it describes the accumulated hedging burden and changes slowly. GEX Volumes is computed on the contracts traded during the session, so it reacts intraday and shows the gamma being created right now.

What is the Gamma Flip level?

The price level at which the market aggregate gamma exposure changes sign, passing from positive to negative. Above it the market is typically in a long-gamma regime that tends to range; below it in a short-gamma regime where moves are amplified. It is a dynamic reference that updates with positioning.

Which plans include the GEX Open Interest chart?

Premium and Ultra. It belongs to the Intraday feature group and is not available on the Free or Strategy plans.

Does the GEX Open Interest chart work on futures?

No. The intraday charts, including the GEX views, do not support futures contracts.
